Summary

I enjoyed the first part the most。 Part two is just psychobabble。 One of its main attempts is to change the beleif that neurosis derive from "eros" to "logos" but this again is an out-dated idea。 I can see why this book was popular in the seventies but I do not think that it is still relevant today。 I enjoyed the first part the most。 Part two is just psychobabble。 One of its main attempts is to change the beleif that neurosis derive from "eros" to "logos" but this again is an out-dated idea。 I can see why this book was popular in the seventies but I do not think that it is still relevant today。 。。。more

This is not an easy book to read, but neither is it difficult and technical。 It is a reflection on how a man survived several years in Nazi concentration camps and then came out and lives a long a productive life helping others find meaning in their lives and cope with the challenges they faced。Finally understood why this book is seemingly recommended by almost everyone that I look up to。 Read this in good times, in bad。 In happiness, and sadness。 It will lift you, and make you see the world thr This is not an easy book to read, but neither is it difficult and technical。 It is a reflection on how a man survived several years in Nazi concentration camps and then came out and lives a long a productive life helping others find meaning in their lives and cope with the challenges they faced。Finally understood why this book is seemingly recommended by almost everyone that I look up to。 Read this in good times, in bad。 In happiness, and sadness。 It will lift you, and make you see the world through different eyes。 。。。more

An extraordinary work born of excruciating circumstances: a great gift to the world。 Of the innumerable attempts at accounting for human suffering and personal agency that have been produced, few are as lucid, as credible, as total, or as universally beneficent。 Ancient wisdom literature perhaps comes closest - thinking here of the Ketuvim (especially Job, certain Psalms, and Ecclesiastes) and aspects of the Buddhist Dharma。 My earliest introduction to these concepts came from Frances Hodgson Bu An extraordinary work born of excruciating circumstances: a great gift to the world。 Of the innumerable attempts at accounting for human suffering and personal agency that have been produced, few are as lucid, as credible, as total, or as universally beneficent。 Ancient wisdom literature perhaps comes closest - thinking here of the Ketuvim (especially Job, certain Psalms, and Ecclesiastes) and aspects of the Buddhist Dharma。 My earliest introduction to these concepts came from Frances Hodgson Burnett。 The comparison may be wildly inapt, but I was pleasantly unsurprised to realize that she'd basically got it right。 。。。more

Felt a kinship with the author。 Core message is for every person to understand their purpose of life and once you do understand that life would cease to be the boring, suffering filled and turn out to be meaningful。 Author reflects on his personal experiences at the camps of world war 2。and tells us how prisoners lived on with dignity and sense of purpose even through the lowest points of suffering。

A very interesting and inspiring read。 The first half really allows you to feel what it felt like to exist in Auschwitz, the desentization, and mental retreat。 And the second half is both a critique on therapeutical techniques that holds true today as well as a very logical way of improving your personal mental health。

To live is to suffer; To survive is to make sense of suffering。 This book is truly heartbreaking, educational, motivational, and inspirational。 It is comforting to read it from various perspectives: to learn details of history that we should not repeat and not forget; to delve into an absolutely optimistic and vitalist philosophy of human existence。 I highly suggest reading the version where Viktor Frankl added a chapter where he dived a little bit more deeply into logotherapy。

Impressive book。 I´ve seen, heard and read a lot about nazism and concentration camps。 But this was different and special。Before reading it, I went through some reviews that said the book had a good first part and the second one was boring。 The author is a doctor who survived several concentration camps。 The first part relates from a very personal perspective what it was like to be there for the prisoners。 Interesting, raw, hard, it definitely shrinks your heart。 20 years ago I visited Dachau an Impressive book。 I´ve seen, heard and read a lot about nazism and concentration camps。 But this was different and special。Before reading it, I went through some reviews that said the book had a good first part and the second one was boring。 The author is a doctor who survived several concentration camps。 The first part relates from a very personal perspective what it was like to be there for the prisoners。 Interesting, raw, hard, it definitely shrinks your heart。 20 years ago I visited Dachau and it was a terrible experience, living witness of human cruelty。 I was in tears for most of the visit and this experience shook my soul。But this book was different。 the description is accurate, he goes into details, sometimes medical details you wouldn't think of。 It is a short book, he doesn't use any more words than those needed。 He doesn't want to cause pity and doesn't insist in harsh details, that's why he goes to the point and all his sentences and stories are meaningful。The second part was particularly interesting for me because he is able to dig into the psyche of the prisoners。 He flies over the physical suffering and goes inside the minds, behaviors and hopes of his mates and even the captors。 He talks about ultimate motivations, about what keep them alive and how human mind worked in those extreme situations。 It is just brilliant, I would definitely recommend this book。 。。。more
